Meet the Principals of VEE

Louise Clarke is a seasoned horticulturist employed by the Morris Arboretum of the University of Pennsylvania. Professionally trained, she is the horticultural director of Bloomfield Farm, where she curates a woody plant collection that includes more than 1200 trees and shrubs. Within the platinum LEED certified Horticulture Center Complex, Louise tends over 5,000 square feet of vegetated roofs. She is a green roof professional (GRP), accredited by Green Roofs for Healthy Cities, and has developed a regionally appropriate palette of hardy green roof plants. Her teaching duties include selecting, hiring, and instructing interns, as well as delivering horticulturally-themed educational programs to professional and lay audiences. As the first Arboretum participant in an international staff exchange program with The Royal Landscape, Windsor, England, she has gained British garden experience. Louise’s membership in GardenComm - Garden Communicators International has provided her with opportunities to speak nationally about the value of mentoring and the documented health benefits of human connections to nature. Louise also teaches continuing education courses for Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. As a member of the Woody Plant Conference Committee, she performs development functions for a regionally distinguished conference aimed at green industry professionals, students, and interested amateurs. Louise also enjoys membership in the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA).
Louise holds Bachelors degrees from Thomas Jefferson University, Temple University, and a Masters in Business Administration from DeSales University. She holds Tree Tenders certification from the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society and a Social Media Marketing Certificate from the University of Delaware. Eva Monheim is co-creator of VEE – Verdant Earth Educators, LLC and an instructor at Longwood Gardens for the Professional Gardening Program where she teaches woody plants and arboriculture. Monheim also is a faculty member at The Arboretum of the Barnes Foundation at St. Joseph University. Professionally trained, she is a horticulturist, certified arborist, master floral designer, artist and writer. She is a member of the International Dendrology Society (IDS), Garden Communicators International (GardenComm), Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS), International Society of Arboriculture (ISA), Hardy Plant Society (HPS) and American Horticultural Society (AHS). Monheim’s articles, designs and photographs have appeared in national, regional and local magazines and she is a former columnist for The Philadelphia Inquirer. Her education in England has given her a global appreciation of garden design and environmental sensitivity. She loves photography with a million images on numerous green subjects. Monheim was an assistant professor of instruction at Temple University in the department of landscape architecture and horticulture for over twelve years where she taught thirteen different subjects in undergraduate and graduate programs. She also taught online for eleven years at the university. Her breadth of knowledge in teaching includes Woody Plant ID – native and ornamental; Arboriculture; Landscape Management – with special emphasis on landscape management plans, staging, design, plant selection, and installation; Horticulture Business Management – developing business plans, PR and marketing strategies; Public Horticulture – curatorial and community engagement; Food Crops – using organic techniques, building urban farms, straw bale and other raised bed techniques; and Senior Seminar – research and writing intensives. Monheim’s extensive teaching experience has empowered hundreds of students who are now working in the commercial and public sectors of the green industry. Monheim has owned several successful businesses including a flower shop and landscaping company. Monheim holds Bachelors’ degrees from the Pennsylvania State University in art and horticulture, a Master of Arts in English from Arcadia University, and post graduate studies in horticulture from the University of Reading in England.
